1.  Can the ISTE 2016 Student Standards be used at the higher education level?

Posted 03-21-2017 03:41

The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) stated in its student standards text that it published last year that these standards are appropriate for all ages. For a study (Developing ISTE NETS-S 2016 Self Efficacy Test for Higher Education) I plan to use these standarts, it is important to answer this question.

In addition, is there an existing scale developed for the ISTE 2016 Standards?

Thank you for your interest.

Hi Ozan,

Great question! A lot of higher education people do use the student and teacher standards in teacher preparation programs. They are less common in higher ed generally. If you are an ISTE member, I recommend joining and asking your question of the Teacher Educator Network too, since they are the official higher-ed PLN.

Also, can you clarify what you mean by "existing scale"?

Last, ISTE no longer uses the term "NETS" and the official title is "2016 ISTE Standards for Students" or just "ISTE Standards for Students," "ISTE student standards." Looking forward to hearing more about your work!

Hi Sarah,
Do you know a rough estimate of Colleges or Universities who are currently using the standards, other than for teacher prep?

Hi Rebecca - I don't. My best guess would be that at the institution level, almost none, and at the individual department or faculty level, very few. I know that in general some institutions are at least starting to address the gap that many students are feeling when they come from tech savvy and project-based high schools and land in traditional university/college classrooms. And during the teacher standards refresh the question of whether or not the new standards could and should serve higher education faculty came up multiple times. Here's hoping!

Hi Sarah,
From my humble point of view ISTE STANDARDS should be part of Higher Education, (University*
I'm really going to talk about the reality of my country, and take it as a subjective opinion.
I believe, as countries,or better as educators we need to start changing ourselves, updating and adjusting to new times. Education
is the foundation of a society and if we want to prepare digital world citizens to be successful in any part of the world we should apply them.
That's the problem. I believe educators should change their role and it depends on ourselves.
I'm not a governor, but I have the decision to apply them I[l do it without doubt.
I believe, educators should be prepare to apply them and that's depend on ourselves and later in a second position to the governments
Take it from an educator who loves challenges and believe we need to promote ISTE STANDARS and improve education around the world.
I believe if you love your career you try to do your best and we should be the start point.
Greetings from Uruguay.
