Subject: Diagnostic Test

1.  Diagnostic Test

Hello!
My middle school is starting a ISTE standards-based class this year, and in order to determine what skills the students have and don't have we are looking for a diagnostic test that evaluates a student's capability with these standards.  Does anyone know of such a thing, either in whole or in part, for purchase or free?  Thank you!

Hey @Jeremy Varner, interesting question! A couple of follow up questions that could help give you the most useful answer:

-What subject is this class?
-What information do you want the diagnostic to tell you?

Thanks!

3.  Diagnostic Test

@ Simon: Thanks for your response!  The class is called Fusion and the standards I teach are literally the ISTE standards.  Our job is to create inquiry-based projects for the students all year long by integrating the standards from the core subject areas with ISTE.  We are approaching this as a standards-based grading class, so I've transferred the 28 ISTE standards into a year-long rubric where the students will choose which standards they want to focus on during a given project and then we will track their progress together over the course of the unit.  By the end of the year they are expected to show growth in all 28 standards.  So, the ability to benchmark all 28 in order to show growth from September to June is my goal--that's the kind of diagnostic I'm looking for.  I hope this makes sense.  Any/all input will help; we're building this from the ground up.  Thanks!

Do you have a copy of the standards? I'd love to connect our students since we are at a PBL charter. I have media creation programs.

@Paul: I'm sorry, I'm not sure I understand.  The standards I referred to are just the 28 ISTE standards put into 8th grade language, then turned into a rubric.  If that's what you would like to see I'd be happy to share that doc with you.  But if you're just referring to the original standards, then they're essentially the ones from ISTE.  Either way, please let me know.

Jeremy,
I would love to see the rubric that you've created in 8th-grade language. We are working on supporting our teachers in the implementation of the standards so we are looking for examples of what others are doing.
Thanks,
Diana

Thanks @Jeremy Varner for the link.  And, thanks to your wife for sharing!

I'd also be interested in your ISTE Students Rubric.

You've been a wealth of resources this week.  Thanks, again@

Hi!  I just thought I would update this in case anyone can benefit from what we've found so far. We've found a for-profit company called learning.com that has a new product out claiming to be what we need. I'm not advocating anything as we haven't taken it for a test drive yet (rep comes this week) but it seems reasonably priced and from there you can judge for yourselves. Also, found a free test designed by Kent State University called TRAILS. It's pretty good, but the only drawback is that it's not comprehensive; covers research/library/language arts topics but not others. More to come as I find stuff out. And thanks!

@Jeremy Varner Do you have a link to the Kent State TRAILS?

Thanks for sharing your findings.  This looks intriguing!

@ Janet: Here's the link to the KSU test:

And, in order to properly cite my sources, I must give credit to my wife, who is an employee at our ESC and knows tons more about this than I do.  She's the one who found this for me.

@Janet Coe, @Paul Rabara, @Diana Eggers

OK, I'm thinking this is what you were asking for.  It's the rubric that we built that 1. puts the 28 ISTE standards in middle-school language; 2. creates a rubric to assess performance in those standards; and 3. attempts to integrate some of the Ohio content standards into the ISTE standards, mostly by highlighting connections that already exist or phrasing things in a way that matches more clearly.  At any rate, best of luck and have at it!  The only thing I would ask is that if you make any amazing improvements to this (and trust me, I know it's not perfect) that you send those back our way so that we can update it.  It's a googledoc that you can find here; this is a copy, so feel free to make your own and make changes.

Jeremy,
Thank you for sharing this in-depth rubric for the ISTE standards!  I will be able to use it in a future classroom.
Thanks again.
