Hi Julia!
You've already received a lot of great answers here about ISTE, which warms my community manager heart. To help clarify a little, there are a few different tiers to ISTE membership: there's having a free ISTE account which grants access to this community (the ISTE Standards Community) and our
COVID-19 Educator Help Desk, and then there are a few tiers of paid ISTE membership (basic and premium) beyond that. It doesn't sound like your professor is asking you to pay for an ISTE membership, so I'd say you're right on track with the assignment by joining with a free account and posting here.
I am admittedly not up on the teaching certification space, but
ISTE Certification is a certification specific to the ISTE Standards (kind of like how you can get different certifications from Google, Microsoft, Apple, etc).
As far as accomplishing 7 standards for your portfolio in one semester, that's hopefully something your professor or your other classmates in this thread can provide clarity on. I'm sure you've already explored it, but
we have full pages on all of the ISTE Standards on iste.org which might help interpret the standards in a way that's useful for envisioning this project. If you're using the Student Standards (which you might not, since we also have Educator Standards),
we also have a whole series of videos that break them down!
Best of luck with your project! If there are any questions I can answer about ISTE membership or the ISTE community, please feel free to reach out. :)

Subject: What is ISTE? Help!
I am a college freshman taking ACE 103 (Digital Instructional Technology) at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Being confused is an understatement, especially since this class is "distance learning" and will never meet. Assignment for the week: "Use your 'teacher email account' to become an ISTE member. Connect with other educators in the ISTE Standards Community." I hope this counts. All I know is that we will have to make an eportfolio that aligns with the 7 ISTE standards using a software called LiveText and "the work becomes part of the Office of Educator Preparation's (formerly Teacher Ed. Office) 3-Step Process for Teacher Education." Is an ISTE certification different than a teaching certification? How am I supposed to accomplish all 7 standards in one semester of my freshman year?!
Any information would greatly help!
Thanks,
Julia
