ISTE for K-5: How does implementation affect the master schedule?

We've had a weekly computer class (40 minutes) in grades 1-5 for years. Thanks to COVID, we went 1:1 for K-5 and our computer teacher went into classrooms to teach students (and some teachers) how to use the devices and apps.  The computer lab is no more.

Here is my question: Does the implementation of ISTE standards completely negate scheduled weekly computer lessons? Teachers wouldn't want what was formerly a special to become their subject to teach.   If so, how will keyboarding be reinforced?

I would greatly appreciate wisdom from school directors (or ISTE specialists) who have already travelled down this path. Thanks!

    Hello Lance,

Hope you are well.  I am not sure the ISTE Standrads completely negates a scheduled computer class/lesson.  I think that way of teaching and learning is an older model. We have used that model for years and I don't believe the "one stop classroom" is effective for learning.  At Saratoga Springs we are looking to integrate the new NYS Computer Science Standards(Which have  many of the ISTE standards embed in them,  Computer Science and Digital Fluency Learning Standards | New York State Education Department (nysed.gov). We are working with our Professional Learning Teams at ways to implement these standards K-12. One positive from the pandemic has been the resurgence and use if technology in all teaching and learning.  Research supports that the "more positive reps" are students get at using the standards. the better chance it will result in a behavior /skill set change.  We are emphasizing the importance of all curricula areas taking small "chunks" of the standards and integrating them for our students.  I hope  that students will hear about the ISTE standards/NYS computer Science standards in all their classes.  We are just starting this integration process, Thanks,

Hi Lance, we have also done away with our separate computer lab class during COVID, and we are not bringing it back. We feel most of the skills should be integrated into the classroom. We will be doing keyboarding in library for 10 minutes/week and in class for 10 minutes/week. I don't feel like keyboarding is a big ask of teachers since they just have to have the students get onto the program, but we in the Instructional Tech department are going to track students' progress and reward students who meet certain goals. Digital citizenship will be taught as part of our morning meeting / SEL in those grades (advisory in the older grades). The only thing we are struggling with where to fit in is coding, but we feel like again it's something the teacher can basically just put the students on (we use Code.org), so we are going to try to have it in the classroom with support from Instructional Tech. I will say that we are going to keep a technology time in 1st and 2nd grades, since we have iPads in those grades and because the students don't know the tools well enough for it to be integrated yet. In those grades, someone from Instructional Tech will come in once a week with Chromebooks and teach lessons.

    Jenna,

Thanks very much for your response. I think it will be very helpful in the decision-making process of how I move forward. So is library time split between keyboarding and checking out books for your lower elementary each week?

Our lower elementary (K-2nd) spend library checking out books and doing reading-related activities (e.g. read alouds). Our upper elementary (3rd - 5th) check out books then will do keyboarding. We are not planning to introduce keyboarding until partway through 2nd grade, because before then we feel like between their hands not being big enough and them not being developmentally ready it's not a good use of time.

We continue to have a "computer" special in K-5, despite being 1:1 in all grades for several years. The parapros who run it focus on "how-to" skills (largely keyboarding, digcit, and coding) which give the kids a basic toolkit and allow the classroom teachers to focus on integration.
