Crosswalk educator standards with student standards?

    Aloha,
I work on a team of edtech coaches for a large K-12 school system.   One of our current projects is working with administrators to upgrade the campus technology plan. One component of the plan is identifying qualities of good technology integration from both the educator and student perspectives using the ISTE standards.  It is interesting that the student and educator standards are not aligned.  It is something I never thought about before but now wonder - shouldn't they?  We are creating a crosswalk but it is not easy.  Would love input from anyone on this.

I am very intrigued by your work and your idea.  Can you explain more what you are thinking?  Are you looking to correlate that this area of the educator standards will line up with this area of the student.  That if a teacher does this, then students will exhibit that?  I would love to know more.

    Aloha e Sara,
Mahalo for your message.  Itʻs been an interesting journey.  Our main campus has 3200 students K-12.  The school administration is looking to identify good examples of technology integration and recognize that my team and I, as instructional technology coaches, would have a good sense of what that looks like.  During our meetings we talked about the fact that everyone know it when we see it but what does that mean?  We thought about those "tech integrated bright spots" and created a list of observable behaviors of students and teachers.  That led us to the ISTE standards.  We started with the student standards and then quickly realized that the those standards are achieved when teacher practice aligns with the educator standards.  We created a matrix that aligns our schoolʻs student outcomes, ISTE student standards and ISTE educator standards.  Not everything aligned but the parts that do seem to work well.  We envision using this tool when working with teachers to design curriculum and reflect on practice. Having a tool like this could also help administrators objectively identify good technology integration.

I would also like to see your crosswalk as you develop it.
As I remember, the NETS standards had the student and teacher standards aligned.  Didn't notice that it wasn't continued in the latest set of standards.

Lynne, I would love to have a discussion with you regarding what you have done thus far. This is a great topic and I believe with more states adopting the ISTE Standards as well as with the Certification, we will have more inquiries like yours.
I will email you so we can begin a deeper conversation.

Hello Lynne--You raise an interesting question re aligning the student and educator standards.  When we were updating the educator standards, we asked ourselves:  Could we mirror the two?  We experimented with that approach and realized two things:

    1) Educators must be competent in the student standards, as would be expected of any content area; and
    2) Educators have responsibilities that go well beyond the student standards.

In the final version, we embedded the student standards and combined them with the responsibilities of educators, like designing learning, accommodating learner variability, assessment and more.

Like Carm, I look forward to hearing more about your work on this and learning how you are implementing the standards.

I, too am intrigued!  I feel that the ISTE Educator Standards hug the Student Standards.  In order for students to have learning experiences that embrace the ISTE standards, the educator must address/express the indicators of the ISTE Ed Standards.  To me, it is ying-yang!!

    Hi Lynne,

I too am extremely interested in what you all are creating.  I would be willing to share my contact info so that when you are ready to share you would have it if you want.  Otherwise, I am curious to see what you are able to come up with.  I believe we are also very close to this point in my county as well asking what does it really look like in each subject or grade level.

    Aloha everyone,
Mahalo for all of the messages.  I am almost done formatting. (sometimes I really hate Excel) Haha.  Will share a link here when it's ready. I added the age band articulations from the student guide. Having one document to reference makes it so much easier to see the whole picture. We hope to use this not only with our teachers for curriculum planning but to support our work in creating a technology skills scope and sequence for both teachers and students.  I would love to see and hear from you on how you measure/identify successful technology integration.

    Stay tuned...

I've struggled with this notion of aligning the two standards in the past but have yet put pen to paper!  Interested to see what develops here.

Has anyone else made a crosswalk between the two?
