COVID-19 Resources to teach

  • 1.  COVID-19 Resources to teach

    Hello,
With gathering all of the resources for distance learning I am finally beginning my actual lesson preps. As a science teacher I think it is important to teach my students about COVID-19. I teach Grades 4-6 so I will be differentiating  this on many different levels. I know I have missed some resources about this already, but I am looking for resources about COVID-19 that can be used for education purposes in the classroom.
    Thanks!
    Alison

There are many great resources out there. Just verify their authenticity.

Local students here are using this site: https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/96dd742462124fa0b38ddedb9b25e429?fbclid=IwAR1cut5FNXI44VIBL

It shows the numbers and other data. They are making some great graphs with this information. They are also tracking to see which counties have had stay at home orders vs the ones that don't and what their numbers look like. I'm sure each state has something similar.

My students are also creating their own PSA's, Quarantine Journals, comics about misconceptions, and more in Wixie. Wixie is offering free 90 day trials right now for those interested. (http://wixie.com or http://tech4learning.com)

    Hi Alison,

This may be too much for younger students, as it is powerfully sobering. It's the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center interactive map with statistics updated multiple times each day.

    https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html

If you think the tracking of those who have died of COVID-19 wouldn't be too upsetting to the children, it would be a way to show them how this is truly a worldwide tragedy. It might also be a vehicle for hope in its numbers of those who have recovered.

This comic from NPR is designed to help kids grapple with what is being asked of all of us, and to get better information about what COVID-19 is:

The Share My Lesson has curated an amazing amount of resources that will be extremely helpful for educators. Highlights of the collection include tips for distance learning, supporting students with disabilities, parent and community printables for prevention (in English and Spanish), along with Learning at Home collections for specific grade levels. Additionally, they included resources for SEL, Trauma-Informed collections, and mental health awareness.

    Hi,

If you have a local health care organization, I would recommend reaching out to them.  We have a student news team who puts together monthly segments to share with our community. This month the did a Google Meet with a doctor and nurse from our hometown clinic.  Our students were able to ask them some good questions about Covid-19.  During the interview, they recommended these sources to get reliable information: The Dept. of Public Health, CDC, and World Health Organization.

In terms of strong, informed discussion, I'd also recommend a webinar that my Rotary district ran a few days ago. It's not short, but I found it comforting to listen to experienced medical people take questions on the crisis.
