Policies for Internet Safety while doing Live Video Chats

    Hello,

My program is doing virtual tutoring during the school closures, which means we're using video chat apps to talk with students and work with them one-on-one. I'm wondering if someone has a protocols or policies for this type of thing that we could implement: we've been having problems with inappropriate things happening in the background of the videos, people answering the call in the bathroom, etc. We want to protect both our tutors and our students from anything inappropriate. Any ideas?

    Hi,

If possible, I would recommend reaching out to your IT director or whoever is in charge of your technology at school.  We use Google Meets mostly as our way to do video conferencing.  I know that within the Google Admin dashboard settings can be adjusted.  The host can always choose to "Record" the meetings as well.  Maybe if students knew that they were being recorded this might cause them to take twice about what they choose to say and do during a video chat.

    Hi Rachel,

I consulted with our Principal Security Architect, Ryan Cloutier, CISSP and recommends this document. It specifically highlights Zoom Security Best Practices, but the information clearly will help all Video Conferencing - Data Privacy and Security Considerations. It also contains helpful Digital Security Considerations.

    Take care,

Hello, I would also recommend reaching out to your IT director or tech team who is in charge of your technology at school.  We use the Apple Classroom suite of tools as our way to do video conferencing.  I know that within the Apple EDU dashboard settings can be adjusted.  The teacher (host) can always choose to "Record" the classroom meetings as well.
