How do your districts in hybrid handle substitute teachers?

    Hi,
My district is currently fully remote and is moving towards hybrid. They are talking about a model where students would be remote half the day and come into the building for two half days a week in different cohorts. I know there are many models for hybrid. I wondered if you have information you can share about how you utilize subs? Right now we don't have any subs for remote teaching. I assume we'll have a greater need when we move to hybrid.

    Thanks for any thoughts,
    Talia

Good morning, Talia. We generally use the following process for hybrid at the secondary level:

    1. Secondary teachers keep emergency sub plan in their Google Classroom. These plans are quick to deploy to students via Google Classroom.
    2.  For planned absences, the teachers creates Google Classroom activities that students use virtually as independent students with an exit ticket. Students in school also work on the same activities in Google Classroom. A teaching assistant or another teacher covers supervision for the students in the classroom.
    3.  At this point, we are trying to minimize substitute traffic in/out of the schools. If a longer term sub is needed, we have several subs who work primarily in our district (not always exclusive ... but we try).

At the elementary level (fully in school), subs are hired with the same subs generally used per school, if possible. Teaching assistants or other teachers (reading, library media specialist, etc.) cover, if needed.

Fully virtual elementary teachers ... I'm not sure!

Hi Talia. This question has come up in some coaching groups I work with. Several of them contributed to a doc that tells how substitutes are being addressed during this time. As you'll see, just about everyone is handling it in a different way! Best of luck to your district.
