Are there issues with opening Google Hangout Meet for Elementary age students?  We use the Google Suite for Education and are trying to figure out if this is legal and safe for kids.

We have it on for grades 5-12.  I would recommend in the Google Admin Console to turn OFF the ability for the student domain to create Video Calls.  This means they can only join hangouts created by staff members and students cannot create their own hangouts.

That's what we have done also. Word of caution, though - even if students can't create their own event they can still stay in the room after the teacher gets offline or even go back into an old meeting.

The Google Meet session remains active until the last person leaves the room. I recommend that you, the teacher, remain in the room until all students/parents have left the room and then end the session.

In my schools, we are recommending Google Meet for all grades because it meets with our privacy policies (I'm in NY).  Google had a major update to Meet yesterday that really helps with the beginning and end issues many teachers were having.  As always, be careful if you are recording the session and make sure no pop-ups or PII is showing while you are presenting.

I had the parents log the kids in. I also stayed on to make sure everyone hung up. I have a friend whose district created norms, which I think I will share with my kids if I do it again. VERY HELPFUL to have those. I also logged back in forty min later and nobody was there.

So nice that Google has made these recent changes! I think it's something we will see continuing to evolve as we go too.

I did create a Google Meet tutorial this week that highlights the additional features of recording and live streaming a Meet session that Google has made available to everyone. I hope it's helpful!

    Rayna,
Thank you for this advice. Is your colleague willing to share a sample set of norms?
    Appreciated!

This is wonderful Jen!  Can I add it to my Online Toolkit for teachers?  https://sites.google.com/wswheboces.org/emergencytoolkit/home

I think this resource would be really helpful!

I asked her to join in and share! I would love for her to share her own work. I did find Matt Miller/Karly Moura's  tweet.

Here are the norms that we are developing. It seems like there are new things that crop up every day, so it is being updated as we learn more.

Google for Edu announced these Hangouts improvements yesterday!

To improve the remote learning experience for teachers and students using Hangouts Meet, we're making several improvements:

    • Only meeting creators and calendar owners can mute or remove other participants in a meeting
    • Meeting participants will not be able to re-join nicknamed meetings once the final participant has left

Our IT department set up Google Meet so only students can join Google Meet and not create a Meet. I also know Google is making updates as well to Google Meet. Feel free to use this Google Meet etiquette guide I created as well.
