Closed Captioning for Zoom

Our teachers will be using the Zoom platform for meeting with online learners.  We have several students with hearing impairments that require closed captioning in real time, but Zoom does not offer this unless someone types the closed captions.  There are fixes for this once you save the Zoom meeting but it looks like we will need an add on service for live meetings.  Would love to hear suggestions that are working for others.

I would love to hear suggestions too! I have heard that amara is decent but I have very limited personal experience. I really, really hope Zoom includes live captioning in a future update... and soon!

    Hi Becky,

This is not an endorsement from ISTE (or even from me), but I saw a discussion about this recently and a service that got recommended by a few different people was 3Play Media. For live captioning, it uses AI and not a live person. Something that seemed like a great idea to me was that you can upload word lists in advance to help with jargon that might otherwise get misheard. I know that's an issue we have with Zoom's automatic transcripts if we're talking about edtech products and services or using acronyms that wouldn't be in your average dictionary.

    Hi Becky,
You may want to check out the Accessibility and Usability Resource Site from QM. There are probably some discussion threads around this topic, and if there aren't you can add one- the site is moderated by experts. You could also check out the National Center on Accessible Materials (AEM). Two great reasources.
    I hope that helps,
    Chris

We were using webcaptioner.com but the API token didn't work so well.  We would use it with split-screen(have the website on part of the screen while sharing a presentation on the other part) when screen sharing to caption but that didn't work when not sharing screen.  So happy that Zoom now has Live Captioning built-in!

Now if only they would have live captions natively without a 3rd party program. Google Meet and Microsoft Teams both have the option for live captions.
