Open Educational Resources: From Curation to Creation
May 7, 2019 from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM (ET)
Open Educational Resources (OERs) are increasingly being used by students and teachers at all educational levels. OERs are “any type of educational materials that are in the public domain or introduced with an open license” (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, 2017). To date, students have largely been consumers of OER materials. In this webinar, I will discuss how students can engage in self-directed learning through the design and curation of OERs. I will showcase a number of examples designed by college and graduate students, including a history wiki for teachers that has been viewed by more than 1.5 million individuals, open online courses for educators, interactive video maps, and a database of online tools for teaching and learning. Attendees will engage in a brainstorming activity to identify ways that OER design and curation activities can be incorporated into K-12 settings to help students build standards-based content knowledge.
The webinar will touch upon important OER design topics such as digital design tools, websites for identifying multimedia sources to adapt and use in OER projects, resources for curating information for the project, and copyright, fair use, public domain, and Creative Commons. Participants will leave the webinar with ideas and strategies for incorporating OER design projects into any grade level and subject.
