  • 1.  District AI Policy

    Posted 30 days ago

At ISTELive23 I attended Matt Miller, Holly Clark, and Ken Shelton's presentation: Embracing Artificial Intelligence and Chat GPT in Education.  In the presentation, Matt Miller spoke about the need for school policies for AI. I agreed with his point that AI technology is advancing quickly, so policies that only focus on what students should not do, will get outdated quickly. Matt Miller suggested that policies also identify what responsible AI use looks like. That sounds like a great idea, but I'm not sure where to begin. Are there K-12 districts in the process of developing an AI policy or is it handled at the classroom level? Does anyone have an AI policy at the school or district level that they'd be willing to share?

Hi, we have not done a schoolwide policy for students yet, but we did create a policy for employees and have our teachers include their own policy in their syllabus. Here is the employee policy and here are the ideas for syllabi. All of these were generated with help from A.I. :) and we anticipate that all will change over time.

    Hi!

Our district is in the process of drafting up some guidance.  Below is what we have put together so far:

Katie- Thank you so much for sharing your document. It will be so helpful as my district tech committee dives into this topic this fall. I especially like that your guidance explains the potential benefits and challenges of AI as well as suggestions for educators.

What a tremendous help to others thinking about the role of AI in instruction! What would be your District's position on other Districts or educational agencies borrowing from or leveraging your work?

Please use as you wish!  As you can see, the work I have outlined is really pulled from other resources, primarily from Common Sense Media.
