  • 1.  Ideas for a Makerspace Idea Board

    Hi all,

    I am working on an "Idea Board" bulletin board for my Makerspace. I'm hoping to fill it with ideas to support students who have a difficult time thinking of something they would like to build.  I have a few things on it, but it is pretty sparse.  I was wondering if anyone has one in their classroom or has some ideas regarding what I can add to it.  Thanks!

    Brent,

    I used to teach a maker-like class to high school students. I would often get physical or digital copies of Make Magazine and I would also show projects from maker website such as instructables. 

    I also made students document their work so that future students can be inspired by previous students. At first they had a picture with a little blurb, but in later years they recorded short 1-min videos describing and demonstrating their projects.

    Hi Brent,

    I have had a Makerspace in the elementary level for the last five years.  I started with a blank board, then printed out blank light-bulb templates.  We then had a brainstorming session.  I start the session with "What is annoying?" to get students to search for problems to solve that are realistic to their lives.  Sometimes I use post it notes - have students write on them and post on the whiteboard, other times I lead a class discussion.  I do give the caveat that the question is "what" is annoying, now "who" is annoying.  From there, we mind map it on the whiteboard or categorize the post it notes.  Once that is finished - students can put their problem-solving invention ideas on the light bulbs to post on the board.  You can also add a few ideas of your own, based on what you have available in your classroom as filler activities.
